There are 81 cities and towns in Latvia: 10 state cities (valstspilsēta) and 71 municipality towns (novada pilsēta). Largest cities in Latvia are Riga (615k), Daugavpils (79k), Liepaja (67k), Jelgava (55k) and Jurmala (51k). The smallest city is Durbe with only 492 inhabitants in 2023. Latvia is an example of a country with a primate city, i.e. the largest city is several times larger than the second largest one: Riga with 615k vs Daugavpils with 79k. The capital city of Riga is home to around one third of Latvia’s population.
