Munich is subdivided into 25 boroughs (Stadtbezirke) each having between 20 000 and 120 000 inhabitants. The most populous borough is Ramersdorf-Perlach. Thus the combined population of all boroughs might be different than the official figure of the whole city of Munich.

The Munich metropolitan area has around 6.2 million inhabitants, and covers around 40 percent of the total area of the state of Bavaria. It includes Augsburg, Ingolstadt and other cities and surrounding areas.
