Population of Leipzig in 2025 was 632 652, according to the population register. Leipzig is the largest city in the state of Saxony and the eighth largest city in Germany. However, official population figures are a bit lower, i.e. population in 2023-12-31 was 608 013. Leipzig is an important scientific, economic and cultural center of Germany. During the first decade after German reunification, Leipzig undergone sharp economic and demographic decline, resulting in approximately 100 000 loss in its population. Succesful urban renewal projects, economic rejuvenation, modernisation of the transport infrastructure reversed that trend and since 2000, Leipzig has been one of the fastest growing cities in Germany.

Thus the combined population of all boroughs might be different than the official figure of the whole city of Leipzig.
